At Sprocket, we talk a lot about self care, what it means (i.e. is it taking care of yourself, or straight up treating yourself?), and our favorite ways to practice it. (Find our team’s favorite methods HERE.)

For today’s Women-Owned Wednesday, we’re celebrating one of our favorite lady-led brands in Denver—and one that we use consistently to practice personal self care: Base Coat Nail Salon. We are obsessed with Base Coat, and walk out feeling like true kweens after every appointment. Without further ado, meet our #WomenOwnedWednesday.

Some very rad Base Coat nail art. Photo from the brand’s Instagram.

Base Coat started after co-founder Tran Wills walked into a Denver nail salon with the intention of getting a pedicure before the birth of her fourth child. She promptly felt nauseated and got a nose bleed, in part from the fumes and chemicals used in the salon. It made her realize the opportunity for a clean nail experience—and she dove into years of research.

She brought on partner Ali Elman, who shared her vision for a clean nail salon experience and a belief that health-conscious consumers didn’t have to sacrifice their health to pamper themselves. Base Coat was born.

The salon’s products are clean—made with essential oils and certified organic, and never made with parabens, petrochemicals, or other ingredients that are harmful to the wearer.

The brand’s polish, too, is one of the few non-toxic polish formulations on the market. Though it isn’t chemical-free (polishes need ingredients that help them stick to the nail and sufficiently dry), they’re free of the 8 worst offenders. (For you clean beauty nerds out there, those ingredients are: Dibutyl Phthalate, Toluene, Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde Resin, Camphor, Ethyl Tosylamide, Xylene, and Parabens.)

As frequent Base Coat patrons, we’re v into the way their products—exclusively available at Base Coat—make our nails feel. Their line of lotions, oils and soaks comes without the stress to our bodies that normal products bring.

Also, the ladies of Base Coat are baller manicurists. They can do a classic nail, they can rock nail art. They’re geniuses. F’real.

Lastly, we’re so psyched that Base Coat is expanding. Its OG location is in Denver’s LoHi neighborhood, and it now has two locations in LA and a second location in Denver. Quite frankly, Base Coat is taking over the nail world, and we’re excited to cheer them on.
